AEDs Gaining Momentum

The state of New Jersey is looking into passing a law that would require schools, recreational departments and youth camps to have automated external defibrillators (AED) for youth athletic events. They are not alone. Numerous states now require fitness facilities to have at least one AED on-site, along with trained staff. As of last count, there are 10 of these states - Arkansas, California, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York (for clubs with more than 500 members) and Rhode Island, plus Washington, DC. Legislation is pending in other states. RESQ Health & Safety Training makes sure Hoosiers know how to use this device and perform CPR in their classes. And there are valid reasons for this push to get AEDs everywhere possible.
  • Every minute a person is in cardiac arrest decreases the chance of survival by 70 percent.
  • When you call 911, the average response time is eight to 12 minutes.
  • If you call 911 and do nothing else, the chance of survival is 3 to 5 percent.
  • If you call 911 and do CPR, the chance of survival increases to 6 to 9 percent.
  • If you call 911, do CPR and use an AED, the chance of survival jumps to 50 percent or more.
With three convenient locations in Columbus, Fort Wayne and Indianapolis, RESQ Training combines these two in one convenient class designed with you in mind. You don't need to be an expert, but knowing how to do these in a moment of crisis is priceless.

If you need more proof, YMCAs nationwide report more than 100 instances of members’ lives being saved because of AEDs, says Michael Spezzano, former national health and fitness director for the YMCA of the USA and current editor and project coordinator of the YMCA’s technical assistance paper on AEDs. AED programs have been successful in for-profit clubs, too. Town Sports International (TSI) reports that members’ lives have been saved since the inception of their program in 2005.

If you don't have an AED in your business, school, or fitness club, it is time to urge them to get one. RESQ can train everyone. Help push for positive change and let RESQ Training do the rest.
