Celebrate Valentine's Day with Heart

Chocolates, five-course dinners and desserts are the typical ways your special someone says, ‘I love you’ on Valentine’s Day. However, these are predictable and not exceptionally respectful to your actual heart. Why not try something different this year? Show a different side of love by going out for an active date. One idea is to try a yoga class.

The origins of yoga come from India, during a time when people practiced it to increase their peacefulness and spirituality. The focus today is much like that of ancient times, helping people relax or de-stress from the everyday challenges and improving the health through flexibility and exertion. This low impact workout is also great for couples looking to grow more intimate. It can be an easy addition to a heart-healthy lifestyle by improving the major needs of everyone – physically, mentally and emotionally.

In addition, if you have suffered cardiac arrest, heart attack or other heart event, Yoga is an ideal activity to re-introduce exercise and help overcome the emotional trauma of the emergency. By doing this with a partner, it will help you both heal gradually and at your own pace. You don’t have to worry about someone else ‘beating you’ or ‘being better’ because Yoga is an experience and a journey.

The American Heart Association suggests getting at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic physical activity each week. While this activity doesn’t count for those minutes, it gets you started on the road to living healthier.

Another activity to include this Valentine’s Day is getting CPR certified. Much like Yoga, this seems like a far out idea. The benefits of both are largely intrinsic, but having the peace of mind knowing you are prepared for whatever life brings you is invaluable. RESQ Health & Safety Training has classes in your backyard – Columbus, Indianapolis and Fort Wayne. They are taught by Hoosiers for Hoosiers. Taking the course with a significant other is the ultimate sign of love saying, ‘I want to be with you forever.’ You are also showing your children, friends and co-workers your commitment to being there when they need you most.

Find a Yoga class and a date on the calendar to get CPR certified with RESQ. You’ll never regret the decision. Happy Valentine’s Day.
