Keep Resolutions in 2012

One of the top New Year’s Resolutions from year to year is getting in shape. The most popular way to do this is by running or walking. It’s the most cost effective means to shedding pounds – you need a good pair of shoes and motivation. Some people have enjoyed their fitness so much, in 2012 they have taken it to the next level by signing up for a half or full marathon. Only about one percent of the population has accomplished this feat and for Indiana residents the number is even lower. This elite group is not made up of crazy health junkies, but of neighbors like you trying to become more fit.

The largest half-marathon in the world is right in your backyard – the One America 500 Festival Mini-Marathon. In 108 days, the starting gun will usher 35,000 men and women from the Hoosier state with representatives from all 50 states and a few other countries. As with most endeavors in life, there are dangers. The benefits, however, far outweigh the risks.

Aside from sore muscles, strains and the like, putting your body through this difficult task can lead a small percent to cardiac arrest. At the Mecca of American Marathons – Boston – at least 1,000 runners and family members will be trained in CPR after local researchers found that immediate use of the procedure could have saved many of the runners who have died from cardiac arrest during a marathon or half-marathon.

The Massachusetts General Hospital study, published yesterday in the New England Journal of Medicine, examined 59 runners whose hearts stopped during races over the past decade in the United States. Among 31 cases with complete clinical data, the researchers found that all eight who survived had received cardiopulmonary resuscitation from a bystander. In comparison, just 10 of the 23 who died received CPR.

This is why if you are planning on doing the Mini-Marathon, or one of the other races listed below, it is important to get yourself educated with RESQ Health & Safety Training CPR.
