You can catch-up on some much needed sleep and finish up all the things you ignored during the school year. One of the things you can knock out is the CPR & AED certification. It sounds like a lot of work, but it can be completed at one of our three locations (Columbus, Fort Wayne, & Indianapolis) or online. This 3-hour course is quick and easy, but can make an incredible difference.

The American Heart Association class is geared towards your specific needs for the classroom. Any situation that could come up will be addressed, but be sure to ask any questions of the instructors. As a wise man once said, 'the only stupid question, is the one not asked.' Here is what you can expect to learn from our Indiana Certified instructors:

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation that includes a test demonstration on a mannequin.

Removing a foreign body causing an obstruction in an airway, and the Heimlich Maneuver.

Hold a valid certification in each of these procedures from either the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association.

RESQ offers the required class in a friendly welcoming environment to ensure the student is comfortable with the skills learned and the opportunity to practice them. As mentioned before, this course can be taken online through our eLearning blended course. Courses are also available on-site or at one of our training locations. Take a look at the calendar and find one that fits your schedule.

RESQ thanks all of our hard-working and dedicated teachers in the Hoosier state. We know it's sometimes a thankless job, but we also understand how much of an impact it has on the future vitality of our cities. Your students will grow up to be difference makers because you are teaching them the tools to succeed. Let us know how we can help you.

Getting Inked

In 1992, the body of a man was found in the Alps between Austria and Italy. This, however, was no ordinary find. Archaeologists and Scientists had stumbled upon a body more than 5,000 years old, perfectly preserved under ice. What he was wearing, the weapons and even his body were completely intact waiting for someone to find him. Once excavated, they realized he was the earliest known person to have tattoos. While they were simple dots and lines, more than 58 distinct areas had ink. Since that time, the art has transformed into what you see today - one of the fastest growing industries in the United States.

In just 40 years tattoos have gone from a way to lash out at the world to mainstream artistic designs. You see them on athletes, movie stars and public figures. What you might not know is middle class suburban women are the fastest growing demographic. Tattooing and tattoo-related art work is the subject of museum, gallery and educational institution art shows across the United States. With more and more shops opening, including Indiana, the need to be trained in Bloodborne Pathogens is even greater than before.

Advances in electric needle machines and increasing numbers of operators make procedures resembling those of medical clinics regulated by government health agencies. Being trained by RESQ Health & Safety training is both simple and cost effective. The American Heart Association’s course uses the PACT acronym (Protect, Act, Clean, Tell) and slogan, "Make a PACT, Know How to Act," to help students learn and easily recall bloodborne pathogens training.

Students learn how to:

Protect themselves from exposure to bloodborne pathogens

Act when exposed to blood or blood-containing materials in the workplace

Clean themselves and the area when exposed to blood or blood-containing materials in the workplace

Tell or report any exposure to blood or blood-containing materials in the workplace

Take a look at RESQ’s training calendar and book your class today. This is also a great class for Correctional Officers, Childcare workers, Security Guards, Maintenance workers, School personnel, Hotel Housekeepers and Health and Fitness Club Staff. The summer brings with it hot days and most families head to the local pool to cool off. This means lifeguards will be in high demand, if they aren’t already. Are you ready to apply for this seasonal job? If you haven’t been trained in CPR, AED or basic first aid procedures, you better get on the ball and register for the course at RESQ.

This course provides training in basic first-aid procedures (including the first-aid skills recommended by OSHA) in a format that can be delivered in a single day. It also offers elective modules in CPR, AED, and environmental emergencies. This course is specially designed to train lifeguards, who would be the first to respond in an emergency situation, and can be tailored to address the needs of a specific workplace or group of employees.

One of the great things about RESQ Health & Safety Training is if you already have your lifeguard position and want the entire staff to go through the class, we can bring it to you. If not, we have classes available at our three locations in Columbus, Fort Wayne and Indianapolis. Not seeing one that fits your schedule? Call us to set one up – especially if you have a group of individuals in your same boat.

Regardless of your motivations, RESQ Training helps Hoosiers get the skills required to be a great asset for pool managers. Let's take a closer look at this issue, albeit a short allotment of space to analyze. For adults, we spend more time at work (typically) than we do at home with family. Aside from vacations, sick time and holidays, in an average year men and women spend 9,948 hours or 249 days of 365 in a typical year at work. For a child, this means the influence of a teacher(s) is paramount to future success. The effect is even greater when both parents are working. Therefore, understanding how much difference an educator can have should weigh heavily on the minds of those who think this issue isn’t a big deal.

RESQ understands this, as fellow Hoosiers and instructors, regardless of our minor differences. What we most value is the commitment made to each child. In addition, we understand your need to be certified in CPR & AED operation should the situation arise. This is why we offer convenient and affordable options to accomplish this task so you can get back to influencing young people in the formative period of their lives. Take a look at our schedule and let us know how we can make this more convenient for you.

As you probably are thinking, we hope you never have to deal with a child needing assistance like this. Being trained, however, will help you have the confidence both inside the classroom and out. You understand, probably better than most, being educated in every area helps you have a well-rounded approach to your profession. With locations in Columbus, Fort Wayne and Indianapolis, we can find you the ideal on-site training ground – even if that means online.

RESQ Health & Safety Training wants you to know your hard work does not go unnoticed. We believe that you have picked a very noble job and should be recognized as such. If there is anything we can do to help you, let us know. We hope to see you soon in any of our classes coming up.

Are you ready for a Tornado?

Spring is one of the most popular seasons because it is typically associated with blooming flowers, soft rains and warm temperatures. There is, however, a downside – volatile atmospheric conditions that lend itself to tornado activity. In 2012, the United States has already seen almost 200 twisters including very severe activity in Indiana. Most recently in Jeffersonville, Indiana one almost completely wiped the city off the map. RESQ Health & Safety Training wants to be sure you are prepared should you be placed in a similar situation. Here are a few things to think about and tips on how to stay safe during this time.

Know the signs:

If you notice strange looking clouds or are beginning to experience dangerous weather, immediately turn on the TV or Radio for alerts.

If a tornado watch is issued, conditions are right for a tornado to occur. If a tornado warning is issued, it means either a tornado has been spotted or the radar shows strong evidence one is imminent.

If you spot something that looks like a tornado, immediately drop everything and get to a safe place.

What to do:

If you have a storm cellar or basement - get to it fast. These sub-ground shelters can help avoid injury, but you must keep watch to avoid being hurt by falling debris.

If you are unable to get to lower ground, head to a windowless area like a closet or bathroom. Shattering glass and other dangerous objects then have to penetrate the buffer keeping you safer than being in the open.

If in a building (like an office or school), go to the lowest spot and into an area like a bathroom. Similar to a house, you want to avoid all open areas and windows. You should crouch down to avoid being hit by anything that could fly around.

If in a mobile home, get out of there. Most mobile home parks have a shelter designed for this exact need. Even if you can’t find one, leave and find a low spot with some covering.

If in a car, park the car and get as far from it as possible. Again, seek low areas.

Be Prepared:

Become Heartsaver First Aid certified. RESQ Training offers courses that could help save a life in this type of crisis. You may be the first responder as emergency personnel are pulled and stretched throughout the affected area. Your office can arrange a training so everyone is ready for this type of event.

Become Heartsaver CPR and AED certified. RESQ Health & Safety Training can also help you get this done with classes in any of our locations: Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, or Columbus. Both of these courses can be learned online or in-person based on your needs.

Regardless of how you want to get ready for the disaster, the important thing is that you do it. As an official American Heart Association certification provider, RESQ Health Training is here for all Hoosiers. Indiana averages 23 tornadoes per year and more than 10 deaths per year. Being trained for these situations can help save a life. Sign-up today and get your friends, family and co-workers to take these courses. RESQ hopes you’ll never have to put the training into real-life practice, but if it does you’ll have the confidence you know what to do.

RESQ Health & Safety Training wishes all Indiana residents a safe and happy spring.

It's National Athletic Training Month

March is National Athletic Training Month. Athletic trainers are trained in and prepared to handle most medical emergencies. Thanks to RESQ Health & Safety Training, trainers in the Hoosier state are better equipped to react when necessary. RESQ offers several different certifications to better educate any need you may have.

Here are a few examples of what you should refresh on a regular basis:

Basic Life Support (BLS) - designed to provide a wide variety of healthcare professionals the ability to recognize several life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR, use an AED, and relieve choking in a safe, timely and effective manner.

Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Provider Course - This classroom, video-based, Instructor-led course uses a series of simulated pediatric emergencies to reinforce the important concepts of a systematic approach to pediatric assessment, basic life support, PALS treatment algorithms, effective resuscitation and team dynamics.

Heartsaver First Aid - a classroom, video-based, instructor-led course that teaches students critical skills to respond to and manage an emergency in the first few minutes until emergency medical services (EMS) arrives. Students learn skills such as how to treat bleeding, sprains, broken bones, shock and other first aid emergencies.

According to Safe Kids USA, more than 38 million children and adolescents participate in sports each year. Athletic trainers provide athletes with quick access to injury care and assure better results, which lead to a better quality of life.

Whether you help a specific team sport or are watching your child participate in one, having these skills can help give reassurance and care to those in need.
Let us help.

Lack of sleep, not enough time, and money are three major stressors in life. While it is virtually constant, stress can be managed. It can also be used to benefit you. If you think about it, all of the possible worst case scenarios can be avoided. For example, if you are overweight it is probably because you have unhealthy eating habits. By changing them slightly like avoiding soda with empty calories can start you on a better path. Not being prepared is also a problem and why RESQ Health & Safety Training works to provide everyone peace-of-mind with educational offerings. Let's take a look at a few ideas on how to alleviate as much stress as possible.

Start Talking

Being positive and using self-talk are a couple of ways to help. Don't lie - you talk to yourself, we all do. By changing what you say from 'This is impossible' to 'I can do this' really goes a long way to making something happen. Negative self-talk increases stress while positive self-talk helps you calm down and control stress.

To help you feel better, practice positive self-talk every day - in the car, at your desk, before you go to bed or whenever you notice negative thoughts.

Planning Now to Avoid Problems Later

We may feel stress because of poor communication, too much work and everyday hassles like standing in line. In all of these scenarios, prior planning can help stop the issues before they start. As mentioned before, RESQ Training provides things like CPR, Stroke Education, and Heartsaver First Aid (to name a few) to give you the confidence needed to react to any situation that arises. Using the American Heart Association courses, RESQ has become an industry leader in Indiana to help you avoid stress. To avoid long lines, call ahead. If you have too much work, make a calendar and priority list. If you feel communication lines have broken down, set up a time to meet with the individuals necessary to get things back on track. A few extra minutes can help immensely.

If you are still have trouble, try some of these out.

Count to 10 before you speak.

Walk away from the stressful situation, and say you'll handle it later.

Go for a walk.

Don't be afraid to say "I'm sorry" if you make a mistake.

Set your watch 5-10 minutes ahead to avoid the stress of being late.

Break down big problems into smaller parts. For example, answer one letter or phone call per day, instead of dealing with everything at once.

Drive in the slow lane or avoid busy roads to help you stay calm while driving.

Find Your Relaxing Activity

Sitting in front of your TV and eating ice cream should not be a regular 'relaxation activity.' The reasons should be obvious: promotes unhealthy habits and relates eating and tv to handling stress. You need to calm the tension in your mind and body. Some good forms of relaxation are yoga, taking a walk, talking with a friend or spouse, or reading a book. Maybe these would not work for you, but the key is to find something where you can have a few minutes for you.
