Blended Learning through the American Heart Association is a flexible training format that combines:
Part 1 – Online Cognitive Course
Students complete the interactive, self-paced online portion through the AHA HeartCode® or Heartsaver® platform. This portion includes videos, knowledge checks, and required testing based on the current AHA Guidelines.Part 2 – In-Person Skills Session
Students then attend a scheduled, hands-on skills session with an AHA Instructor. During this session, students practice and are evaluated on CPR, AED use, and other required psychomotor skills using manikins and real-time feedback.
Is Blended Learning the Same Certification as Classroom Training?
Yes.
Upon successful completion of both the online portion and the in-person skills evaluation, students receive the same official AHA eCard certification as those who complete a traditional fully instructor-led classroom course.
There is no difference in the certification card issued. The AHA eCard:
Is valid for 2 years
Meets OSHA and regulatory requirements
Is accepted by hospitals, schools, healthcare employers, and state agencies
The only difference is the delivery format — not the credential.
Why Many Employers Require the In-Person Component
Most employers and regulatory bodies require hands-on, in-person skills validation — not online-only CPR training.
Blended Learning meets this requirement because it includes:
Instructor-observed skills testing
Real-time compression and ventilation practice
AED competency demonstration
Formal psychomotor evaluation
This is why many hospitals, school systems, daycare centers, manufacturing facilities, and healthcare agencies accept — and often prefer — the AHA Blended Learning format.
