In 2026, Indiana has implemented significant updates to training standards to ensure home health agencies (HHAs) align with federal Medicare expectations. The biggest change is the July 1, 2026, Medicare Enrollment Mandate, which effectively standardizes training requirements across the state.

Here are the requirements presented in a clean, professional webpage format designed for RESQ & Arise.

Indiana Home Health Compliance: 2026 Training Requirements

Maintaining compliance in Indiana is changing. As of July 1, 2026, all Indiana Health Coverage Programs (IHCP) home health providers must be dually enrolled in Medicare. This shift means your staff training must now strictly follow federal 42 CFR § 484 standards alongside Indiana state law.

1. CPR & AED Requirements

For all direct service staff (DSPs, PCAs, and HHAs), CPR certification is mandatory and must be completed before face-to-face interaction with clients.

  • Hands-On Requirement: Indiana does not accept 100% online CPR cards. Training must include a “hands-on” skill demonstration with a manikin and a certified instructor.

  • Approved Providers: Certification must come from an approved entity like the American Heart Association (AHA).

  • Renewal: Certifications must be kept current (typically every 2 years).

2. First Aid Training

First Aid is a core competency requirement for home health staff. Training must cover:

  • Emergency precautions and injury prevention.

  • Response to medical emergencies.

  • Documentation of competency stored in the employee’s permanent personnel file.

3. Home Health Aide (HHA) Training Updates

While Senate Bill 180 (2026) has sought to streamline HHA training, agencies must still ensure high-level competency:

  • Initial Training: HHAs must complete a competency evaluation program. For federal compliance, this traditionally includes 75 hours of training (with 16 clinical hours).

  • Annual In-Service: HHAs are required to complete at least 12 hours of in-service training per 12-month period to maintain their registry status.

  • Tube Feeding Module: Since 2024, a mandatory IDOH-approved module (4–8 hours classroom, 2–4 hours practical) is required for any HHA performing gastrostomy or jejunal tube feedings.
